When a person typically thinks of a barrier one would envision an obstacle that’s stopping your ability to move forward. This is something that is created with a sole purpose to hold you back or contain you, not help you break free. A new street wear brand on the rise is set out to defy the odds and change the meaning of a barrier completely.
To Barriers NYC, the meaning behind the normally negative connotation is something different. To them, a barrier is used to “separate the great from the rest.” That is why founder Steven Barter Jr. worked to develop the brand.
Originally known as Fair One, before the concept of Barriers NYC arose in 2014, Barter sought out to create a brand that would not only be recognizable to people by their unique logo, but also relatable because of their story.
There are three fists that make up the Barriers NYC logo that not only depict strength, but also unity. It is based on the 1979 film “The Warriors,” where a story is told highlighting loyalty and strength that is brought upon by a time of risk and danger. This theme can essentially be seen throughout each of Barrier NYC’s collections. Not only is the brand unique in its name, but also it’s also unique with the stories each collection tells.
Barter seeks to relay the story of the way he and partners Jeff and Malik came up. Each member plays a vital role in the message the brand tells, which is not only of moments of hardship, but also times of success. He notes that it is the story behind the clothing that makes it memorable and by presenting pieces with meaning he hopes to add to the brands timelessness.
We have only seen the beginning for Barriers NYC. Barter tells World Tour NYC that there are more collections to come in the near future. Street wear lovers can look forward to an upcoming fashion show taking place at Morgan State University on April 16th that will debut their new collection. Barter teases that this upcoming collection will essentially be “pitch black” with a look book that will be shot in a school setting. After the initial debut takes place, Barter plans to drop the collection a week after.
Pieces by Barriers NYC possess elements of passion that Barter prides himself in producing. He ensures that followers can expect clothing that is not only created from the heart and relay a message, but also allow one to create their own opportunity.
